When it comes to planning a wedding, there are SO many decisions to make from what color flowers do you want to what your first dance song should be. As the photographer, I am always happy to help guide my clients when they have questions about their wedding day and one questions that is always up for debate is whether or not to have a first look.
For some, you may not know exactly what a first look is. Well let me shine some light on this increasing wedding day trend. Simply put, a first look is when the bride and groom choose to see each other prior to the wedding ceremony. There are a few reasons a couple may want to do this:
- Opportunity to have a private/intimate/emotional time with each other before the ceremony. This may be the best reason of all.
- Takes the edge off for all those anxious folks – sometimes the wedding day anticipation can make a person stressed or even sick with nerves!
- Option to get more time as a couple for portraits. This also allows for the after ceremony pictures to not take as long because at that point, you really only have to do wedding party and family formals.
From my personal experience, I wanted to do the first look for a few reasons. Most importantly, I am a private person and wanted to soak in all of the moment of seeing Brett for the first time with no distractions. It would allow me to be myself and really relish the moment. I got to shed some tears, hug him for a long time and laugh. It also allowed us to set aside more time for our couples portraits rather than being limited to just having time after the ceremony and cutting into our reception time.
I totally get the magic of seeing your love for the first time when you walk down the aisle- I mean, that’s what love stories are made of! But I would suggest to all my brides and grooms to consider a first look. It could be a great way to set aside some intimate time on your wedding day that’s already scheduled to the minute for just you and your love. You won’t regret the private time or extra time for your wedding portraits.
